Judge Dennis Hirning’s Intro
My name is Dennis Hirning, APSA, MPSA from Billings, MT.
Here is a little information about me. You notice the letters after my name.
These are recognition awards from PSA. The APSA is given because of past service to PSA. Some of this includes being the past Chair of the Projected Image Division, Exhibition Standards Director for the Electronic Image Division before it merged with CPID to form PID, and Region Director for Montana and Wyoming. I was drafted for the Implementation team that set up the Projected Image Division when EID and CPID were combined. I have judged for competitions from club level to International Exhibitions and also for the EID Image of the Year. I am currently the Director of the 365 Gallery, which involves taking a different subject every day of the year. I am also the administrator of a Digital Dialog Study Group.
The MPSA comes from throwing a lot of money at various international exhibitions in order to get at least 1500 acceptances. I need to get my bookwork done to see if I can qualify for my GMPSA. I know that I am about in spitting distance of the 3000 acceptances required for it.
I either have, or should have if I would get my paperwork done, my 7th Galaxy in PID Color, 4 Stars in PID Monochrome, 3 Galaxies in Nature, and probably 3 Galaxies in Photo Journalism. I have 5 Stars in Photo Travel, 5 Stars in Small Color Prints, and 4 Stars in Small Monochrome Prints.
What does all this mean? Not much. Just that I have been around the block too many times.
I would like to remind you that my comments on your images for this competition are just one person’s opinion. Each of you might have your own opinion but, unfortunately, for this competition, my opinion is the only one that counts.
I would like to thank you for the opportunity to be your judge. You have great images and I enjoyed seeing each one even though it was not easy to select your award winners.

Judge James T. Stover’s Bio
I am a retired software engineer. I received my first camera in college. I started shooting slide film and continued with slides over the years. I upgraded cameras and eventually abandoned slides for digital. Most of my early photography simply documented my travels and family events. So many record shots.
I joined the Plano Photography Club over 25 years ago, and I credit joining the club with greatly improving my photography. The activities, classes, and competitions sharpened my skills and my eye, and I am currently in the Masters Class. My photography evolved from snap shots to art. I highly recommend being involved with your photography club; your skills will improve immeasurably.
I have served on the board of PPC in many positions; I was president three times and have been editor of the newsletter, The Flash, since 2010.
Judge’s general comments on the images
In most contests, the images may not have any name or identification on the image. I noted this for many images but did not count off for it.
Some of the images could use a little cropping. Several has either distracting elements at the edge or included too much dead space.
Some of the images were too centered. It is too easy to put the subject in the center, but the Rule-of-Thirds really does improve the image.
Several of the images had foreground elements that were either too small, too centered or just not as dramatic as could be.
Finally, I liked the images. Nighttime is not easy, especially with long exposures, light painting and wide dynamic range, but does make for some very dramatic images. I could have given out a few more HMs, but I had to limit myself to the ones that called out to me.

I am an active member in PSA. Currently I am the Nature Division Secretary and I am also the PID Digital Study groups Director. (I would encourage any of you that are members of PSA to join a study group). I also judge camera clubs in our area. During the spring and summer months I photograph graduations as well as horse shows. I also photograph events for one of the local medical centers and shoot a few portraits here and there. My main love is nature and I spend many early mornings out on back-roads or in nature reserves getting my shots. I love what I do and I keep working on improving.
